TOK: About Perspective

Standard

How does perspective affect how you see the world and your place in it?

Different people have different perspective of the world. Perspective means different viewpoints which can affect by the differences in our culture, religion, geography and politics. Although the world is always the same, we view it in different ways because of the different perspective we have. Our perspective is based on our knowledge. Those knowledges can be given by our parents, our teachers, our culture and our environments, but we can also learn it and gain it ourselves.

From the map activity that we did in class, I noticed that we all drew the map in a different way which also means that we view the map in a different way. The largest difference that I noticed was somehow the Chinese put Asia in the middle and the others put Europe and Africa in the middle. This is because those are the kind of maps that we grow up seeing it (See picture 1 and 2). I don’t think there is any wrong with placing yourself in the middle of your own map of the world. When we are younger, we put our family in the center of the universe, because that’s all we know. As we grow up our world view expand, we find out that we are not the only one in this world. Just like what King said during the discussion: “knowledge can make us feel small.” So our knowledges can affect how we see the world and also how we place ourselves in it.

There are also many other differences such as the details of the map. While most of the students in our class are Asian so that Asia is the continent that we are most familiar with and the one with most details, Victor drew South American with the most details because he’s from Brazil. As a Taiwanese I will definitely put Taiwan on the map, while other people might not even thought of Taiwan because it’s so small. The differences in our map can also due to the politics. In a Chinese map, they might put Taiwan as a province of China, but in a European or American map, they put Taiwan as a separate country. The different politics and educations can also change our view to the world.

I don’t think there is such thing as a correct or incorrect map, because we all have our own way of analyzing and presenting the map.

I used to think… Now I think

Standard

I used to think language is just a way of communication, so I didn’t found it interesting or important. But now I think that language is such a fascinating subject after learning that it contains so many cultures, meanings, transformations, influences and knowledge that I don’t know about before.

Everything around us can be language. Besides speaking, writing and reading, the abbreviations we use on the internet, the names of the shops and brands, noises and sounds, all of those are languages. Actually there are a lot of knowledge about language itself and how to use language. Different people can have different ways of using language. Their choice of words, way of expressing feeling and language, accents and tones, all of that can be affected by their cultures, beliefs, family, friends and communities. In different culture, words can have different meanings, and the use of language can be very diverse too.

In fact we are learning language every day and everywhere we go. We learn language when we chat with others, texting your friends and reading random quotes on the internet. Learning how to use words cleverly, learning how to express our thoughts clearly to the others, learning how to use quotes appropriately, and learning how to persuade others.

After this one week of discussing and reading about language, I found a deeper interest in this topic. I no longer think that language is boring, because now I know the importance of language.

ROMANTICISM VS. REALISM

Standard

After a careful discussion, Cathy and I decided to focus on the question “How did Romanticism lead to the emergence of Realism”. From here we came up with the research question “What are the factors that cause the shift from Romanticism to Realism”

We decided to make a video about the history of Romanticism and Realism. After talking about that we can add our interpretation of how it move from one to another base on the history. Because it’s a multimedia project we are also making posters on the literature we are going to read. I am reading a realism literature called “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen and Cathy is reading a romanticism literature called “Les Miserables” by Victor Hugo. After writing about our own literature we will compare the two to see the similarities and differences. Also we are going to create our own poem and art work base on out understanding of how a romanticism or realism poem will be like.

Because Cathy is not here this week we are working on it individually, so after she come back we can put them all together to create a complete work.

19th Century European Literature:

From Romanticism to Realism

For our finally unit, we are going to do a project based learning on 19th Century European Literature. So instead of just reading literature in the 19th Century, we are going to do a multimedia project base on our learning and understanding. Personally, I like learning this way than just reading text.

For this project I am working with Cathy. During the first few lesson, Cathy and I did some research on the vocabularies and the background information. After discussing we decided that we are going to do something about Romanticism and Realism. Although both Romanticism and Realism were movement in literature and art during the 19th Century, they were very different. Romanticism was more about nature and expressing feeling while Realism was more realistic. I found it very interesting about how could the two distinguished movement existed during the same period and how can they influence each other and this is why we decided to do more research on this.

In the next few lessons, Cathy and I decided to focus on “How did Romanticism lead to the emergence of Realism” and from this focus we will need to come out with our research questions.

Dark Warning

Author: Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick

Many things happened during those few chapters. One of the plots that surprised me is that Billy and Taney use her gift to gambling. Taney uses her talent to see how the game goes and send Billy signal on what to bet and how much to bet. They make a fine team; good collaboration and group working let them win a lot of game. But Billy didn’t clean the other players out, he kept the winning and losing fairly even so that he earn some extra pennies but not as many as he could have. They spread the coins evenly. Taney placed the coins inside her locking box, and this is when Taney tells us that those are her running away money, which makes a connection to the book cover. On the book cover (see picture) you can see a girl running away. At first I don’t know if the cover means any things or have any connection to the book, but now I know. Later in the book, Taney tells Billy that she wants to run away to London where no one knows that she is different. She wants to start again and live like everyone else. This shows us once again about how much Taney dislike her gift and how much she wants to be normal like everyone else. In chapter 15, Taney uses her talent in front of everyone for the first time. A necklace has been stolen at the house Taney and Mary Kate work at. Mistress Lacey who is the owner of this house thinks that Miss Hickson stole it. Taney, who wants to help her, uses her gift to find the necklace. I felt happy for her, she finally finds her gift useful.

Reflection on Unit 4: Media Matters

Standard

During this unit we were learning about media and advertising. We learned about using different ways and methods to make advertising more efficiency and more effective. Yesterday our group,Eva, Erik, Victor and I, did a presentation on media campaigns, introducing environmental issue on marine pollution.

How was this unit CONNECTED to what you already knew?

We see advertising and media everywhere in our life, on the streets, in social network, on internet, on TV, in books, everywhere. It’s one of the things we see every day in our daily life, since we are living in a modern society. These already made a connection between this unit and our life. When we look at those commercial and advertising, we can see there are things in command. Like the types of text and color, and the use of language. There are many connections between those commercial even though they are promoting different product, the ways they advertise it are still alike. In order to make our media campaigns more effective, all of the products we produce are connected in some way, either by the logo or our slogan or the color and the front. Those connections can let people recognize us as an organization which can make our campaign have more influence to people.

What EXTENDED your knowledge?

By doing this unit and the project on media campaigns I learned many dangers happening in our world right now by researching and by watching the film “Inconvenience truth”. “Inconvenience truth” talked about global warming which is something that I don’t really know much about before, and by watching this film it give me a more detail view on global warming and how it can be a big issue. For our media campaign we are doing marine pollution. From researching I learned a lot of facts, causes and effect of marine pollution.  I also learned how badly marine pollution is right now and how people don’t take it as a big deal. Also before I learned this unit, I didn’t know that how advertising can be such a big process like media campaign, I thought commercials are just by itself didn’t know that they are connected.

What CHALLENGED you?

Actually for this unit I don’t think there is a very big challenge for me. But for our group, one of the biggest challenge we faced was we are doing marine pollution and there is no sea in Chengdu, this means that we need to take everything from the internet like pictures and clips to do our products for example videos, posters, brochures…  Another challenge is how to make our media campaign unique from others. Every media campaign will have posters and bookmarks, what special product can we make that’s different from everyone else? This is when I come up with the idea of making our own T-shirt for our organization and I think its pretty success.

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

Standard

People always think that they should act like their age, but what if age doesn’t exist, would people act differently? I think I would. Sometimes age can be a cage that locks you up with the number of your age. As you grow up, the cage will turn smaller and smaller, and the things you can do will get lesser. Because you know that people are watching you now, you have to act like what the other want you to, you have to take responsibility, and be mature. I do the same thing too. One time my cousin sister wants one of my favourite notebook, no matter how much I love it I have to give it to her, because I am the older one, I have the responsibility to take care of my sister. Another reason that we can’t do whatever we want is people will judge you. We always care about other people’s opinion about us. So to give other good first imprison we act mature and do what we supposed to do. For example once my friends and I went to amusement park I wanted to do one of the ride but my friends laughed at me and said that is for little kids and to act like teenager I didn’t go on the ride. If I didn’t know how old I am, I think I would probably be around 9 year old, because I still want to do a lot of childish things.

Passion Project Update

Standard

March 5th, 2015

Jasmine and I are working on our passion project together and we wanted to create a short comic book called “DAILY”. Both of us like drawing and anime very much and we always wanted to draw our own comic book. Now we finally have the opportunity so we decided to work together on this passion project. This comic book is just going to be about some silly things that happened in grade 10 daily. Since there are always many funny and stupid things that happen in our class, we wanted to record it down using a form of comic and make people laugh and know more about our class. Our research question is “How can we use different techniques to make daily life be presented in interesting comics.” This project is going to be a big challenge for me, cause it is my first time to draw out own comics. I am still not very good at drawing character’s action and also the background, so I think after this project my drawing skill will improve a lot. Now we finished designing all the characters and we will start drawing soon. Hope our comics will be interesting to read.

Reflection on my exam

Standard

Exam is one of the most frighten thing for me, it have been a long time since I have took a serious exam like this. Before in my old school we only have unit test, but not big semester exam. Maybe is because of this, I am very not use to doing an exam. I felt very nervous during the exam and I didn’t manage my time well, which leads to not having enough time to complete or check the test. I don’t think I did very well in this exam, it’s worse than what I thought it will be. I made many errors and many of them were silly mistakes, which made me feel bad because I could have got it correct. Next time, to improve, I’ll review regularly and practice more problems before the test. I want to thanks this exam for showing me what I’m bad at, and what I can improve on. My goal for this semester is to manage my time well so I can have enough time to complete what I suppose to do and what I want to do. And also improve my writing, spelling, grammar and math which i am bad at. In this semester I want to work harder and do better than the last exam.

Reading Journal – The importance of being earnest

The Importance of Being Earnest

Author – Oscar Wilde

Act One

In the first act, Algernon and Jack tell each other their secrets. Algernon has an imaginary friend called Bunbury, who is very sick and lives in the country. Every times when Algernon wants to go the country, he use it as a reason – to visit Bunbury. He also use Bunbury as an excuse so he don’t have to have dinner with his Aunt Augusta. Jack creates an imaginary brother called Earnest who lives in the town, so that he can go to the town whenever he wants. I found Algernon’s and Jack’s lies very reasonable. We always find many different reasons and excuses to keep us out of the things or people that we don’t like and go to do the things we like, just like Algernon and Jack. Although I never created an imaginary person as an excuse, I used homework as an excuse. When my parents wanted to take me to dinner with their friends, I’ll tell them that I have too much homework to complete so that I don’t need to go with them.
